Surprisingly Friday was race day for the downhill! So today the crowds poured over the hill as riders negotiated one of the best downhill tracks going around. The great thing about Crankworx is that if you can’t make it yourself you can watch the live feed, coverage of the downhill was really well done, hats off to the organisers.
Here are some observations from today; the Kiwis didn’t dominate as some were predicting, team Polygon UR were unlucky with both Pro Male riders flatting, Eliot Jackson could be having his best World Cup season to date if today was anything to go by, AGreg Minnaar did some serious damage to his hand and is unlikely to race the first World Cup, Connor Fearon rode a different bike for today only and still managed 5th!
Today was a slower day on the downhill front, timed practice was the main event in that space. Interestingly enough rain did fall during this practice which was the first time it has really rained here this week. That said the thick forest kept most of the ground in there dry, other sections, such as the open grassed areas were another kettle of fish! A few riders had off the bike excursions and some riders, such as Gee Atherton, crashed into or avoiding other riders.
There were other events held today, in no particular order Speed and Style, Pump Track Challenge and Slopestyle practice.
Speed and Style results:
1. Martin SODERSTROM (SWE)
2. Adrien LORON (FRA)
3. Bernard KERR (GBR)
Tomorrow is the finals for the downhill so check back soon for that.
Tonight a pretty fun event by the name of Whip Off Oceania Championships went down! It is pretty self explanatory, basically the biggest whip wins, riders have to pull the whip back, i.e land normally and not leaving their tale out to dry! Casey Brown threw down and took out the women’s event and Ryan Howard was going past 90 for the men deservedly taking the win (credit to some of the locals who were going huge!).We will leave you to check out the action via the photos below:

The 2012 Oceania Championships’ were held in Rotorua, on a track that many riders’, said was one of the best race tracks they have raced on. Conditions varied over the weekend with rain falling in the finals on Sunday. Many ofAAustralia’s Elite riders were preparing for the first World Cup in South Africa and didn’t make the trip over to race. AAustralia’s highest Elite Men’s finish was thirteenth, Junior Men were better represented and Australia claimed three out of the top five places.
