Round 1 of the 2011-12 Victorian DH series was held at You Yangs on track 10, more commonly known as ‘Turbulence’. The track could be described as a flat out blast down a hill with some big jumps and tricky rock sections, not much in the way of tight or technical riding meant that it was going to favour the fitter and stronger riders but still be a lot of fun for everyone else.
The weekend got off to a wet start with heavy rain for the first hour of practice, fortunately it soon passed and stayed away for the rest of the weekend.Race day came along and the U17, U19 and Elite (Mens and Womens) classes had the balancing act of saving enough energy for the finals and going quick enough to simply qualify on their mind. There was only a fine margin of error as there were only 8 seconds between qualifying first and being outside of the cut off in the Elite Men’s category.
Shortly after the qualification runs the sun came out and the track began to dry and hence the track was beginning to speed up.By the time finals came around the track was running very fast and the top riders all displayed this by taking seconds off their qualification times.
A special mention goes to Dean Lucas who, as a U19 rider, set the fastest time of the day!
