Val Di Sole 21st August – Morning practice

Just after this shot was taken Steve Smith crashed on the fast chute that exits into the last big steep corner, he will unfortunately miss this afternoon's finals.

Under 2 hours until racing kicks off here in Val Di Sole, a quick update on the situation. Rain fell last night but not enough to be noticeable, it had all disappeared by the morning. Steve Smith is injured and won’t be racing this afternoon after qualifying 2nd. Based on crude calculations, done by timing riders in this morning’s practice, the media contingent have Troy Brosnan ranked as high as 2nd place for the finals! Add to this his mum dreamt he finished 3rd could this be his first podium? Lets hope so.

Watching qualifying on Friday in the top rock garden the first 13 riders came through, then Troy came through and the crowd broke into applause, he was so smooth. This was the only rider I witnessed where the crowd did this. The practice session had riders still checking lines and lots of near misses. One tree in the final rock garden had Danny Hart, Gee Atherton and Troy Brosnan all shoulder it on the way through. See the photos below on how tight these guys push it.

The padding on the tree to the right of the photo got plenty of use! Here Gee manages to save it after giving it a shouldering.
Cutting it fine! Troy was another rider that said hello to the tree on his way through but kept on his way and rode it out.

That’s the update so far, look out for a big photo update after the finals.
